Study: One Extra Quality Session Per Week in Marathon Training Linked to 16-Minute Faster Finish
A study published in Sports Medicine in September 2025 analyzed the training logs and finish times of 917 runners who completed the 2022 Boston Marathon. Each additional quality session per week in the year before the race was linked to a 16- to 17-minute faster finish on average. In the final four months, each one-day increase in weekly cross-training sessions was linked to a six-minute improvement, and runners who reduced weekly run frequency versus their base phase finished about three minutes faster.
