Assefa takes center stage in Sawe's absence at the Berlin Marathon
Sabastian Sawe has withdrawn from the BMW Berlin Marathon through injury, leaving Tigst Assefa as the headline act for the race on Sunday 27 September. Assefa won Berlin in 2022 and 2023, setting a then world record of 2:11:53, and has since lowered the women's-only world record to 2:15:41. Rosemary Wanjiru and returning Amane Beriso are named as her main challengers.
The withdrawal reshapes the Berlin Marathon elite field, and the piece frames Assefa's world-record history and her main rivals as the race's central storyline.
