"I Had to Finish My Mile": The Last Tenth of a Mile That Saved a Neighbor's Life
Lt. James McConville of FDNY Ladder 151 was finishing his usual 6-mile loop through the Bronx when he noticed smoke coming from a house in his neighborhood. He jumped into rescue mode—just without his fire gear. McConville, who runs 15–20 miles a week partly to protect against sudden cardiac death (the leading cause of on-duty firefighter fatalities), says he encourages other runners to learn CPR. His uncle, Battalion Chief Fred Scheffold—who was also a runner—was among the 343 FDNY firefighters killed on 9/11. McConville says running the annual Tunnel to Towers 5K is the race closest to his heart.
